Bet types: how they work and what they cost
The bet type decides how risk and return combine. Understanding it matters twice: once for your own budget, and once for bonus terms, which often treat bet types differently. One selection, one outcome. The return is stake times odds. Singles are the easiest to price and to control, and they carry the bookmaker's margin only once.
Accumulators
An accumulator combines several selections; all must win. Odds multiply. Hypothetical example: three selections at 1.80, 2.00 and 1.50 give combined odds of 5.40. The margin multiplies too — three selections each with about 5% margin combine into a noticeably larger one — which is why accumulators are profitable for bookmakers and popular in promotions ("acca boosts", "one leg fails, money back").
System bets
A system bet covers several combinations of your selections. A "2 from 3" system, for example, places three doubles; if two of the three selections win, one double pays out. Systems reduce the chance of losing everything and increase the total stake, because each combination is a separate bet.
Handicaps
A handicap gives one side a head start. With a European handicap the line is whole-numbered and a draw on the handicap is possible; with an Asian handicap, half or quarter lines remove the draw or split the stake between two lines, so part of the stake can be refunded.

Cash-out
Cash-out lets you settle a bet before the event ends at a value the bookmaker offers. The offer includes a margin, so repeatedly cashing out tends to cost money over time. With bonus money, cash-out is often disabled or makes the bet ineligible for wagering.
Which type suits a budget?
Singles at moderate odds keep results closest to what you expect; accumulators produce rare large wins and many small losses. Neither changes the margin you pay; choose by how much variance you are comfortable with, and set the stake before the event.
