The retirement rule
If a player retires mid-match, bookmakers apply different rules: some void all bets, some settle match-winner bets if at least one set was completed, others settle on the officially declared winner. Markets already decided (for example, first-set winner after the first set) usually stand. Read the operator's tennis rules before betting — this one clause decides more disputes than any other.
Surfaces and schedules
Results on clay, grass and hard courts differ, and some players are much stronger on one surface. Tournament schedules also matter: a player who has come through long matches earlier in the week may be tired. None of this makes a bet safe; it only explains why odds move. If you do not follow tennis closely, prefer small single bets over accumulators of favourites, where one surprise loses everything.
